
Ed Azzam, 2024
Ed retired after 42 years of coaching with the completion of 2021 Westchester High School season after he began coaching at the age of 25. He is second all-time in Los Angeles City basketball with 15 titles to SCBBHOFer Willie West’s 16 at Crenshaw, including the 2020 crown and six California State Titles at Westchester. Azzam surpassed West in 2017 for the most all-time wins in LA City Section history, and had a 932-286 lifetime record. His 2004 team was named the CalHi Sports State Team of the Year and Azzam earned the 2002 Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year.
Former Comet greats that played for Azzam include Trevor Ariza, Amir Johnson, Sam Crawford, Zan Mason, Dwayne Polee Jr., Brandon Granville, Hassan Adams, Ashanti Cook, Bobby Brown, Gabe Pruitt, Brandon Heath, Tony Bland and Elijah Stewart. He also mentored and trained Trisha Stafford-Odom, a former WNBA player who now coaches at North Carolina Central University. Azzam received the 2016 CIF Distinguished Service Award on behalf of the CIF LA City Section. He was inducted into the LA City Sports HOF in 2017. In 2022 the Westchester gymnasium was named after him.
