The 2003 Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Hall of Fame selection was one of the best all-time coaches. Darlene was the winningest in Division II history in her 20-year career (1974-1994) with a 519-119 record (.813 winning percentage). The Broncos won NCAA women’s titles in 1982, 1985, and 1986 (twice selected as national coach of the year), plus finished second nationally three times and took third once. She also won 13 straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference titles. May is also recognized as one of the best female referees in history (the first to officiate a men’s international game at the 1977 World University Games in Bulgaria). She was the first female to officiate Olympic Basketball when she was a referee at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She also coached for 10 years at Connelly HS, winning CIF titles. In HS she coached SCBBHOFers Ann Meyers Drysdale and Nancy Dunkle. She was a basketball/softball standout at Fullerton College, earning her degree from Cal State Fullerton. In June 1999 she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She passed away at age 56 in 1996 from cancer.
